Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Function under the direct supervision of the school nurse.
- Does not represent him/herself as the registered nurse at any time.
- Follow the school nurse’s instructions regarding procedures and assisting in the daily operation of the clinic.
- Communicate information continually regarding students to the school nurse.
- Maintain and respect all matters concerning students in a highly confidential and private manner.
- Is knowledgeable of the OSHA standards regarding potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Attend annual OSHA updates.
- Sign students into the clinic, noting the reason for requesting services.
- Keep the school nurse informed as to the urgency of student needs.
- Take student temperature and vital signs when indicated.
- Administer care to students as directed; contact parents, as appropriate.
- Locate students as requested by the school nurse.
- Answer clinic phone calls appropriately identifying self as clinic assistant; summarize requests to School Nurse.
- Provide minor care and first aid as authorized by the school nurse.
- Complete work in the time specified.
- Assist with medications when trained, observed and directed by the school Nurse.
- Help maintain and support the school clinic in function and appearance.
- Refer any suspected child abuse and neglect cases to the school nurse Immediately.
- Assist with medically involved or medically fragile students as directed by the School Nurse and as appropriate to licensure or certification.
- Use a wheelchair to transport injured students to receive treatment.
- Assist with supply purchase and inventory.
- Perform other related work as required and as delegated by the registered nurse.
- Perform other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.
Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED. Prefer RN; LPN or CNA or EMT. Health Care experience.
Ability to lift students; good written and oral communication skills; computer skills; knowledge of universal procedures for communicable diseases and blood-borne pathogens; Hepatitis B series; current CPR and First Aid training.
