Summary
Language interpreters are required on an as-needed-basis to provide interpretation services at meetings and events, as well as document translations. Interpreters must complete all hiring paperwork and a translation sample prior to their first interpreting assignment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Translate both oral and written technical, educational and general materials from English to a specified foreign language and from a specified foreign language to English.
- Respond to telephone and in-person inquiries, interpreting and explaining words and phrases for proper meaning and appropriateness.
- Produce verbatim translations of formal meetings using idiomatic expressions when appropriate.
- Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretations using designated language for department, program, school, and community functions, conferences, events, or meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality when working with student academic and personal information.
- Facilitate communication with impartiality.
- Provide dignity and respect to all parties regardless of race, color, gender, religion, nationality, or political persuasion.
Qualifications
Demonstrates an understanding of the job description.
Demonstrates the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written communications and effectively interact with parents, pupils, teachers, administrators, classified employees and the community.
Demonstrates good communication and human relations skills.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree.
Language Skills
Considerable knowledge of English and of a second language and related cultural differences. Some knowledge of educational terminology. Demonstrated ability to provide accurate, complete, and clear interpretation services. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or public.
Reasoning/Other Abilities
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Ability to complete a task in a reasonable time frame.
Physical Demands
Work involves limited physical tasks and operation of office equipment.
Work Environment
Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards.
Evaluation
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
