Job Title:          Speech-Language Pathologist

Reports to:       Director of Special Education Services

 

Summary

A speech language pathologist assesses and provides therapy to children who have a communication disability.  This may include difficulties with articulation, language, voice, fluency or swallowing.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. 

  • Provide a therapeutic program to meet the individual needs of speech and language impaired children.
  • Provide a thorough assessment of speech and language development.
  • Complete reports and IEPs accurately and within the set timelines.
  • Keep thorough ongoing records for the students receiving services.
  • Serve as a member of the various committees to address the needs of students.
  • Work in a manner which ensures accountability, confidentiality and compliance to all federal, state and district guidelines.
  • Provide information and training for school staff and parents on speech and language topics.
  • Conduct screenings and consultations with parents, teachers and students.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.

 

Qualifications

  • An understanding of speech and language development in children.
  • A working knowledge of assessment instruments and therapy techniques.
  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences and professional literature.
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with staff at all levels.

 

Education and/or Experience

VDOE:  Effective July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, in order to practice speech-language pathology in Virginia public schools, an individual must hold an active five-year, renewable license with a valid endorsement in speech-language pathology or a current, valid license in speech-language pathology issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Effective July 1, 2015, in order to practice speech-language pathology in Virginia public schools, an individual shall hold a current, valid school speech-language pathologist license issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

 

Training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with children.

Physical Demands

Work involves limited physical tasks and may involve operation of office equipment.  Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a school environment.

Evaluation

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
